NDC heads to Kumasi for a townhall meeting on Ghana’s ailing economy

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is organizing a town hall meeting on the economy and governance on Monday in Kumasi. It is the first political activity of the opposition party in the new year.

National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, in a statement said the Kumasi town hall event will dissect Ghana’s ailing economy and the obnoxious E-levy policy.

“The general public is encouraged to look forward to these riveting and constructive engagement, which will be streamed live on several media platforms across the country,” the party said in a statement.

Speakers at the town hall meeting will include the MP for Asunafo South Eric Opoku, MP for Yapei Kusawgu John Jinapor and the MP for Techiman North Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare.

Background

The NDC and its minority group in parliament have consistently urged President Nana Akufo-Addo and his administration to reconsider the 1.75% tax on electronic transactions proposed in the budget for 2022, insisting that the levy will worsen the difficulties that many Ghanaians are already facing.

Many sections of the population have called on government to withdraw completely, the tax, described as obnoxious. Others have urge government to rather stop the corruption by its appointees and save the country the millions of Ghana Cedis it loses to corruption. 



Government is however convinced that Ghanaians will support the E-Levy.
