The rapid increase in positive Covid-19 cases has caused havoc across the Premier League in recent days. Several matches have been postponed and squads have been depleted. Chelsea are no different.
Four members of the Blues first-team squad had tested positive in the build-up to the game, according to Football.London. Tuchel confirmed prior to kick-off they were Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku. Kai Havertz is also awaiting the result of a PCR test.
The absences forced Tuchel into a reshuffle. Christian Pulisic led the Chelsea attack with Mason Mount and Hakim Ziyech in support. Ross Barkley was the only attacking option on the bench.
In terms of chance creation, Chelsea weren’t impacted. They dominated the opening period but failed to take the opportunities that came their way. It was a similar story in the second period.
Thankfully for those of a Chelsea persuasion, the Blues managed to unlock the door. It was just reward for those in attendance. Understandably, many fans opted to stay away from Stamford Bridge; there were large sections of empty seats in each stand.
Chelsea’s next home game is on December 29 against Brighton. Quite what situation Premier League football – and the UK as a whole – is in at that point is sadly anyone’s guess.
