NDC Minority Group maintains its ground, votes against E-levy bill

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) members of the Finance Committee of Parliament have voted en bloc against the E-levy bill after the committee’s deliberations on Monday.

All twelve (12) NDC members of the committee voted No against the approval of the report on the Bill with the twelve (12) ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) members also voting yes. According to reports from the Committee’s sitting, the Chairman of the Committee Kwaku Kwarteng exercised his casting vote to tilt the vote to 13- 12.

Government’s plan to introduce a 1.75% Electronic Levy in its 2022 Budget Estimates and Economic Policy has been widely opposed by the people of Ghana, with the NDC Minority Group leading the charge and insisting that it will remain opposed to the levy.

Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said in a statement that “the killer E-levy of 1.75% will subject Ghanaians to immense financial pressure and further thwart our nation’s ease of doing business and digitization drive.”
