Ghana will face Nigeria in the final round of qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The ten teams (countries) that qualified for the play-off stage were entered into a draw on Saturday in Doula, Cameroon.
Considered more of a ‘local’ derby, Ghana’s Black Stars who were humiliated at the ongoing AFCON 2021, will be getting ready for what is already an expectant game with the Super Eagles. The two countries have been arch football rivals for decades, and the matches scheduled for March this year will rekindle the rivalry.
Nigeria has shown great promise and is been touted as one of the competition’s favourites in the AFCON tournament, as against Ghana which crashed out disastrously from the competition.
The winner of the Ghana Nigeria match will be in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. The first leg will be in Accra. Out of 49 matches between the two countries, Ghana has a record of 21 wins, 10 losses and 18 draws.
Ghana’s last appearance at the World Cup was in 2014, after two previous appearances in 2006 and 2010. The team failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament.
In other fixtures from Saturday’s draw, Egypt will play Senegal, Cameroon will lock horns against Algeria, Morocco will face DR Congo while Tunisia take on Mali.
