Tema court grants Oliver Barker-Vormawor bail

Convener of #fixthecountry Oliver Barker-Vormawor, arrested for threatening a coup and charged with treason felony, has finally been granted bail by a Tema high court.

Oliver was arrested on February 11, 2022 shortly after he arrived in Accra from the United Kingdom and has remained in police custody for over a month. The magistrate court before which the accused was arraigned refused him bail because of a lack of jurisdiction in relation to the charges preferred against him.

Lawyers for the accused in their case for bail argued among others that Oliver Barker-Vormawor’s Facebook post in which he stated that he will “do the coup” himself if parliament approves the 1.5% E-Levy was a conditional statement. The lawyers, who were led by Mr. Akoto Ampaw, also told the court that their client is not in any way a flight risk and should be granted bail.

In granting the bail on Wednesday, Justice Daniel Mensah directed that the accused presents two sureties one if whom must submit documents to landed property. He will also report to the police once a week. His passport will also remain with the police.
