STATEMENT: Mahama tours eight Accra constituencies.
September 15, 2024
As the Assin North by-election approaches, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Charles Opoku, appears to have already lost a vote.
According to available information, Mr Opoku, who claims to be a native of Assin Bereku, is not a registered voter in the Assin North Constituency and cannot vote for himself in the election.
The Leader and Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, during a community durbar on the last day of campaigning, urged the electorate to vote for the NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson, stating that the NPP candidate was not a registered voter in the constituency.
“The NPP candidate, we know, is not a registered voter here. His vote is at Tarkwa Nsuem right now, and he cannot vote for himself in this by-election. How can one contest an election but can’t vote for himself? This means NDC’s Gyakye Quayson has scored one goal….”, Mr Mahama said, to the cheers of the crowd.
Mr Mahama also added, “We should punish him.”
The Assin North by-election has become necessary after the Supreme Court ordered parliament to expunge the name of Mr James Gyakye Quayson as a lawmaker following an allegation of dual citizenship. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
